Writing & Editing

Stories with one thing slightly off.

I like sharp premises, flawed people, and the exact moment an absurd situation becomes emotionally expensive.

Working title

And the Worst Goes To…

An actress wins Best Supporting Actress for the worst movie of the year. The trophy is technically an honor. Everything it does to her career is not.

Bad brand deals. Hate-watch revenue. An agent reconsidering every life choice. A mother displaying the award on the mantel like it belongs there.

Well, I just won Best Supporting Actress... for Worst Movie of the year. I’m not kidding. Apparently, this is an official award now. And I was graciously given this award for my abysmal performance. Cheers! Don’t worry, your champagne is free of arsenic... just don’t sneak a sip of mine.

The acceptance speech I was contractually handcuffed to give plays in my head on repeat, the track is nails on a chalkboard. Truthfully, I don’t remember a thing I said, but I’m pretty sure I hit all the marks for an ‘acceptance’ speech.

They really should call it an accountability speech. “Here, take this trophy and tell us how you fucked up so royally.”

I haven’t Googled my name since the Grammys. Why would I? My name will be forever associated with Best Supporting Actress for Worst Movie of the year.

The arsenic must be hitting me. I failed... yet again... to mention that this movie was intended to be a drama. Rotten Tomatoes says otherwise. I should have thanked those viewers who hate-watched and had a laugh.

They’re the ones paying my insulting royalties. I signed on the dotted line too quickly, don’t do that. Learn from me at the very least.

Usually, when you win any award associated with Best Movie of the Year, you’re flooded with brand deals, bypass auditions, land roles, and your schedule is booked for the next decade.

In my case, I’ve received a single brand deal. Slippers. It gets worse, they double as mop-duster-bullshits. It paid 15-grand, single payment, no residuals per purchase, zilch. Nationwide commercial, all social media.

A virtual moth flew out of my phone when I checked my account balance this morning.

I doubt you’re wondering what’s next for me.

02Crime / Dark comedy

Working title

A Little Off the Top

A single mother with a record works in a barbershop where the haircuts are legitimate and the side business absolutely is not.

A crime story about survival, misdirection, and the inconvenient amount of evidence people sweep off the floor.

03Field guide / Workbook

Working concept

Expect to Be Disappointed

An emotionally practical guide for holidays, breakups, interviews, and other events capable of ruining your vibe before appetizers.

Prepare for the familiar comment. Decide what it means before it happens. Keep score if necessary. Laugh when you get home.

How I build a story

Premise first. Then pressure.

  1. 01
Find the detail that does not belong.

The wrong award. The suspicious pile of hair. The family comment everyone pretends is normal.

  2. 02
    Build the system around it.

Who benefits from keeping the strange thing normal, and what breaks when one person stops cooperating?

  3. 03
    Make it cost something human.

The joke gets sharper when the character wants something real.

Put the writing brain to work

Have words that need sharpening?

Bring me the draft, the half-formed idea, or the message everyone keeps explaining differently.
